The Story of
According to the owners, Jason Giacoppo and Stefan Stabic, they both enjoyed a band called Mastodon, in particular a song Black Tongue. “We both liked the name, and stuck with it,” says Giacoppo.
He says although at first the idea of opening a bar was simply banter that arose one evening during band practice, they saw a gap in the market. “There is nothing similar to Black Tongue in the area. We wanted to open a chilled hangout for the locals, such as you might find in Melville, and turned the dream into a reality.”
The idea was to create a warm intimate environment, and a place where it’s good to pop in for drinks or light meals. “In terms of design, we chose high rise bar-height tables, promoting social interaction among our guests, rather than a more formal sit-down setting. This makes it easier for people to interact.”
The music, which is played at conversational levels, includes chilled hip hop, beats and instrumental jazzy hip hop, with some classic rock, and blues thrown in to appeal to every taste. “We wanted an old school vinyl mix up vibe, and will be looking at doing some events, getting a DJs in, having DJ Chilled Sundays, and maybe even an 80s evening or two.”
